Forbes – May 5, 2020

By Katie Chang

I love cocktails, but there’s a big difference between bouncing over to The Commodore (my local watering hole) to knock back a few – and attempting to recreate that experience while sheltering at home during COVID-19.

For starters: I’m a lazy drinker. While I appreciate the boom of DIY cocktail content – and as much as I miss having a freshly-made libation in front of my face – I have zero interest in putting together an elaborate bar setup in my apartment. Not only is it time-consuming, it’s expensive. (And doesn’t spending excessive cash at the moment ring a little tone deaf?) Also, I’ve never been a fan of fussy drinks (or food, for that matter). While potent potables involving far-flung ingredients, rare spirits, and esoteric techniques have their staunch supporters, I’m not among them. So, after weeks of drinking cheap and readily available red wine and canned beer at home, I started craving something more – but something simple and straightforward, too.

Co-founded in 2015 by Alan Miller and Danyelle Rabine, Blue Marble specializes in premium, pre-mixed cocktails at a wallet-friendly price. Though the category is especially flourishing right now (thanks to the hard seltzer craze), the company has quietly been doing things the right way from the beginning. “Danyelle and I started Blue Marble because we wanted an all-natural, ready-to-drink cocktail that wasn’t watered down, but couldn’t find it anywhere,” explains Miller.

It all begins with ingredients. Blue Marble cocktails are made with just three things: natural fruit juices, handmade syrups to sweeten, and quality spirits made in-house. In addition: the brand’s vodka – which is distilled a whopping ten times for a super-smooth finish – and gin are also available for purchase. The company’s hard seltzers, too, leave the competition in the dust by using its own vodka (rather than a malt base), and clocking in at just 95 calories per serving.

To dispel the myth that ready-made drinks don’t deliver the same punch as just-made ones, every cocktail contains 15% alcohol by volume. Just open, and pour over ice. But while Blue Marble endorses having a good time, it’s also acutely aware of the business it’s in. “Because we’re an alcohol company, promoting responsible drinking is extremely important to us,” says Miller.

As for the flavors, there’s nine of them, with a focus on the classic and tried-and-true. Marble-rita is Blue Marble’s spin on the margarita, while vodka fans have plenty to flip for, including a Moscow Mule, Cosmo, and Bloody Mary. And the rum-based mojito and Coconut Island will have you drifting off to a sunny, tropical destination after a single sip. Though the 200 milliliter cans are convenient if you’re drinking at home solo these days, they’ll come in just as handy when everyone’s out and about again (think tailgates, pools, even planes).

But most important: how do they taste? “As many companies looked to improve margins, we looked to give consumers an experience: the ‘wow’ factor,” says Miller. “When we compete in taste tests against other brands, participants always ask about what we use to set us apart. We truly believe that tasting is believing.” Need more proof? Then look no further than Blue Marble’s best-selling Bloody Mary, which was voted the World’s Best Ready to Drink Cocktail at the 2019 World Premix Awards in London.

SAN DIEGO SPIRITS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL SPIRITS COMPETITION ANNOUNCES DOUBLE GOLD FOR BLUE MARBLE COCKTAILS

SAN DIEGO SPIRITS FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL SPIRITS COMPETITION

San Diego, CA – September 16, 2019

The 2019 San Diego Spirits Festival International Spirits Competition had one of the toughest fields to date with great entries from both the USA and internationally, all spirits were judged on their individual merits and attributes. Blue Marble Cocktails adds a Double Gold to their already expansive medal line up.

The 2019 bottle judging competition was well supported with over 228 from craft distilleries, American merchant bottlers, and large familiar labels. Brands were divided into respective categories as determined by spirit type or style, including whiskey, bourbon, rum, gin, vodka, and flavored vodka. Judges were divided into panels and participated in blind tastings of the spirits, using their knowledge and expertise to analyze and scrutinize the participants’ aromas and flavors.

All samples were covered and tasted in the NEAT glass which has been designed to dissipate alcohol and magnify aromas, the NEAT glass is the official judging and tasting glass of the San Diego Spirits Festival International Competition All tastings were held blind, and the integrity of the competition was safe guarded by sample preparation in a restricted room away from the judging area, with strict adherence to a single specific category for each flight.

The integrity of San Diego Spirits Festival International Spirits Competition starts with the quality and expertise of the Esteemed Judges, who have a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds and this facilitates a true, and unbiased quality of judging process.

“The quality of spirits entered this year was exceptional” said George Manska inventor of the NEAT tasting Glass and the official Advisory Council for the San Diego Spirits Festival. In total, 138 Medals were awarded across all categories; only 16 Double Gold medals were awarded this year. Absolutely no automatic awards were given. Every medal awarded was won against a field of competitors and stood on its own individual merits.

Alan Miller, CEO and founder of Blue Marble Cocktails stated, “We are honored that out of all the entries Blue Marble Cocktails won a Double Gold at this year’s San Diego Spirits Festival. We set out to make amazing cocktails that are not only all-natural, but ultra-premium and packaged in an aluminum can to help keep the blue marble blue. Winning awards like this means the world to our family owned and operated business and our entire team that makes up the Blue Marble family.”
The winning brands were announced at the 11th Annual San Diego Spirits Festival which was held on August 24-25 at the Port Pavilion Broadway Pier and brought together industry insiders and cocktail consumers for a weekend of community, discovery and education.

“The festival’s goal is to bring cocktail and culinary enthusiasts together over spirits we already know and love while introducing what’s new and exciting in the industry,” explains San Diego Spirits Festival founder Liz Edwards.

2019 WORLDS BEST PREMIXED COCKTAIL

2019 WORLDS BEST PREMIXED COCKTAIL

2019 WORLD’S BEST PREMIXED COCKTAIL

WPA best premium cocktail

London, UK

The 2019 World Premix Award winners have now been announced and new comer Blue Marble Cocktails from the USA has taken the over-all win with the title World’s Best PREMIXED Cocktail and overall Best Style win.

Following the final tasting in London, Blue Marble’s Bloody Mary beat out global submissions and clearly showed you don’t need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to great tasting cocktails, you just need to perfect it. With the perfect balance of robust tomato juice, premium vodka, saltiness and heat, it pleases the most discerning Bloody Mary aficionado. In the ever more diversified spirits industry, taste is not everything though. A product these days needs to be able to stand out of the sheer crowd on the shelve saying ‘Buy me’ and Blue Marble’s Coconut Island says exactly that and walks away with World’s Best Style award. The style design is clean, inviting, and says “you’re on vacation anywhere anytime”.

Alan Miller, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Cocktails had to say this about the announcement, “I am absolutely stunned and honored. The premixed cocktail market is extremely competitive and as the new company competing with the smallest to the biggest, I just can’t say enough how proud I am of our team. My family and I were frustrated consumers who wanted something better, premium, and without all of the chemicals, dyes and preservatives we saw in other premixed cocktails. 3 years ago, we didn’t know a thing about the industry or how to make them. We simply knew if we used the best ingredients, we could make the best cocktails. With lots of research, passion, trial and error, and of course a big dose of fun, we built our own state-of-the-art factory from the ground up, have national distribution, and have worked as a family to share our success in donating our time and money to keep our earth, the blue marble, blue. We are honored that some of the biggest clients in the world serve our drinks and being named World’s Best is icing on the cake.”

The World Premix Awards are the global awards selecting the very best in all internationally recognized styles of Premix. Presented by TheDrinksReport.com, the world’s Number 1 online resource for drinks professionals, the World Premix Awards select, reward and promote the world’s best Premix to consumers and trade across the globe. The result was the new winner of the World Premix Awards: 2019 World’s Best PreMixed Cocktail as well as 2019 Best Style Winner, both awarded to Blue Marble Cocktails.
